About the AuthorI see from my server logs that some of you have searched for information about the author of this site. Well let me introduce myself. My name is Hades and I am the god of the underworld. I wrote this site because I have always had a passion for Greek Mythology and I also wanted to develop my web programming skills. While there are tons of sites about Greek Mythology in general, there are relatively few about the underworld. Being the god of the underworld, I felt it was appropriate that I exploit this niche. I began writing stories about my favorite characters in the underworld. My goal is to cover them all. I have used Bulfinch's mythology extensively as a reference as well as the encyclopedia Brittanica, and one of my favorite books, "D'Aulaires' book of Greek Myths". At first, I wrote all the stories by hand, but then I used the mythical properties of Public Domain texts to speed up the process. Many of my pages are derivative works based on Bulfinch's Mythology (So are many other books). I have edited them to pertain to Hades, and changed the dialogue to be less obtuse. Thomas Bulfinch had a habit of literally translating the ancient Greek poetry whenever there was dialogue to be found in a story. As a result, the characters in his books drone on and on in a very round-about and voluminous way. Many of the ancient texts are like that. The Iliad goes on and on for endless paragraphs describing who exactly was in the Trojan war and where they came from and what their shoe size was. It is very tedious to read. Therefore, I believe that it is best to read modern adaptations of the tales such as those found in Edith Hamilton's aptly named, "Mythology". I have put together a collection of what I hope are easy to read and enjoyable tales about the underworld all in one place. You can take the guided tour, or search the index. You can consult the Oracle of Delphi, or search the site for keywords. After that, you can sign the guestbook. Many people have a misconception that Hades was a Greek version of Hell. It wasn't. Many believe that Hades was a Greek version of the devil. He wasn't. One of my goals is to combat these popular misconceptions. My site now gets traffic from all over the world. The guestbook has begun to collect signatures. The oracle has been consulted many times. The river Styx search engine has found thousands of pages, and the site ranks highly on Google. Hopefully, this site will continue to grow and improve. |
