Cerberus and the Entrance to HadesOn the other side of the River styx lies the entrance to Hades, guarded by Cerberus, a giant three headed dog. Past Cerberus are the Asphodel Fields, where the majority of the dead lead a dull existence. Cerberus would allow shades to enter, but not to exit. With his huge jaws and serpent tail, he was fearsome to behold.
He was the son of the mother of many monsters, Echidna, and her giant husband Typhon. Heracles was strong enough to overpower Cerberus, but when Orpheus went looking for his deceased bride, Euridice, he sang so sweetly, that Cerberus lied down and let him pass easily.
