Hades' Symbol

Free Money

A while ago, I got a few e-mails asking what Hades' symbol was. The server logs showed that people were looking for "Symbol", "Hades Symbol", and "Symbol of Hades" among other things.

Well for you people who seem to want a page about Hades' symbol, here you go!

First, let me ask why you think Hades has a symbol in the first place. It is true that there were some things which were sacred to or associated with a particular god and could be used to identify a god or goddess. Such things could be thought of as symbols, but are better referred to as attributes. Peacocks were associated with Hera. Lightning was associated with Zeus. Piles of stones were associoted with Hermes. A shield called the Aegis was associated with Athena.

These objects could be thought of as "symbols", but there are many other things associated with the gods as well. The pomegranate and the cukoo are sacred to Hera. The eagle and the oak are sacred to Zeus. The winged sandals, hat and staff are attributes of Hermes. The owl, the cock, and the olive are sacred to Athena. So we see that none of the gods has only one "symbol" (other than their own name).

So what attributes identify Hades? The plants sacred to him are the cypress and narcissus. His attributes are a sceptre, Cerberus, a cap of invisibility, the key to the underworld, and a two pronged staff.

But the ultimate symbol for Hades is this one:

Hades

In English it translates into "Hades"
