The Mundus
On Three days of the year, the lid to a pit in Rome called the Mundus Cereris (the Mundus of Ceres/Demeter), would be opened. The Mundus was considered to be an entrance to the underworld. When it was opened, the manes (shades) or spirits of the dead were free to wander about the earth. On these days, no business could be conducted, no taxes levied, and no marriages could take place. In 1914 a vaulted pit was discovered on the Palatine Hill and it may be the mysterious Mundus Cereris. The Musdus was opened on VII Kalends September (August 24th)' III Nones October (October 5th), and VI Ides November (Nowember 8th)
